Hey,

I got my first brown egg today to go along with the monstrous white one one of my beautiful ladies decided to give me. When I first saw it it appeared to be rich brown but when I picked it up it started turning white now there is white dots all through it. I was reading that sometimes the colouring comes off brown eggs but that seemed to be cooking. I just wanted to make sure that this is normal and the egg is ok? The shell is thick chicken seems normal so I assume it is but wanted to do let check.

On a side note every time I open the coop and she those eggs there I feel like a little kid opening a gift.

I agree the egg is fine. I don’t know that what you saw is even an abnormality. Chickens can do a lot of different things with their egg shells. It has nothing to do with what is inside the eggshell.

When a hen lays an egg, the last thing she puts on it is a wet layer we call “bloom”. That is a layer that helps keep bacteria from entering the egg shell. It goes on wet but quickly dries. You may have seen it before it was completely dry so it looked like it changed color. Looking at them in different light can make them look different too.

Just enjoy that egg.
