Brown Leghorn Chicks

That's looking pullet. I currently have this baby (not a leghorn)View attachment 4183916those are black breast feathers. What's nesting with me is the rest of the chick.View attachment 4183917mixed breed of mixed breed, so I'm thinking cockerel from the breast, but the rest of the body is dun laced? Dunno what I'm dealing with from the genetics mix, so...waiting. 3.5 weeks old, so more time yet.
I love the edges of the wings! Keep me updated, I’d love to see what it looks like grown.

I found this and hope that it will help with the sexing of day old brown leghorn chick's.

That’s a cool article! They had very dark chipmunk stripes so hopefully they all are pullets. I’m only keeping 2 in the long run…I’ll just make sure my two are pullets 😂

Ok these babies are 2 days from 4 weeks and they all pretty much look like this. Their feathers look brown and black! lol. Comb is pretty big too 😳
That looks like a pullet. Leghorns naturally grow massive combs very fast, even pullets.
Anyway, have you felt like your chicks from TSC are smaller than usual? I'm wondering because I just bought chicks from TSC (for the first time) in June, and now they're almost 6 weeks old and they are TINY. I'm talking like bantams sized, while all the breeds I bought are decent sized large fowl layer breeds. At 5 weeks old a chick can still fit in my (small) hand. Anyone?

Oh wow! Thats pretty small. I do feel like these ones are smaller than the red sexlinks I got from them a year and a half ago at this age. But this is also a smaller breed. So I don’t know really. What kind did you get?

I got 2 black sex links, a Rhode Island red and an amberlink. By the way sorry for asking this on your thread, I just realized :hmm

Oh no don’t be sorry; I don’t mind! Those aren’t especially small breeds but I’m sure your babies are ok. As long as they’re acting fine and eating and drinking! How’s the Amberlink? That’s one I want to get eventually. I love the lighter color. These brown leghorns are soooo flighty 😳

The amber link is actually the biggest of the bunch, and I think she’s 2 days older than the rest of them. She’s not flighty but all of my chicks except her don’t mind being picked up. I think it’s just the bigger size that makes her a little more awkward and uncomfortable to hold. She’s not scared of me and hangs out near me a lot though. I thought she was a rooster even though they’re super easy to sex at birth. Comb and wattle growth was insane at 3 weeks ish, but stopped soon after that, which is good. Overall great breed!

That’s good to know! I always come back to them when I’m looking at brown layers. Definitely adding some to the flock maybe next year. I have these brown leghorns, some EEs and an OE I added this year already so I need to stop 😂

For brown layers, I really love my black sex link so far. She’s the nicest and I absolutely adore her shiny black coat with golden red leakage. So gorgeous!!! My problem so far is I have too many brown layers and there’s so many more brown layers that I want to add to my flock 😭

Ps one of my black sex links got mixed up and ended up being some sort of Easter/olive egger. Be careful and look at the chicks the worker is choosing!
