I have an older brown leghorn flock around 4-6 years old. They have been slowly dying off from old age, buts it's usually very sudden. One hen has recently started acting very weak and cannot even keep her head up. She can't jump on the roost and can barely walk without falling. She seems to have a very slobbery beak and is often wipping it on the ground.
I made her own little cage set-up inside the coop with lots of bedding and her own feed and water. The other chickens were pushing her around and stealing her little piles of feed I would give her. They were also pecking at her head and making her comb very bloody. I slathered antibiotic ointment on it. At night, I cover her up with towels and blankets since it's very cold here atm. I also gave her some fruit so that she could get her water in another way.
Anyways, I'm assuming that she is just dying, but I want to make sure it's not a cold or another (non-contagious) sickness. So, I was thinking of giving her some amoxicillin. We have some fish amoxicillin in the cabinet for pet emergencies, but they come in 500mg capsules. Is there a certain dosage for chickens? Also, how can I go about giving her the powder and separating the powder to get the right dosage? Thanks!
