Brown leghorns certainly ARE pretty. And I was right, the hens I saw this morning were not brown leghorns. They were darker on the hind end of the chicken like your's are, but, the were more of a plain chestnut on the front. They did not have the cute white ear either.
I don't know a lot, but, to me they looked like New Hampshire/RIR cross......
Thanks so much for the pictures, I will print them and take them with me on my next "brown leghorn" shopping spree. . . . .
We have one Brown Leghorn. I got her in a 'test group' of chicks late last Spring...breeds that I wanted to try. I really like her. She comes right over for treats, etc. She lays 5-6 eggs per week. Always kinda fun to get her pretty white egg among the brown, bluish and green ones.
We like her well enough that I added 4 more to a hatchery order for March.
Here's a pic of her:
edited for typo...my fingers don't want to work right today

Yes, white earlobes. That's standard on a Brown Leghorn. (Anything else would mean a mixed breed, not a full blooded Leghorn.)
Mine isn't really flighty either. More like Miss Jayne describes....aloof. She does not like to feel cornered inside the coop. She doesn't like to be petted. But she is friendly and doesn't freak out unless trapped. At night she's like any other layer - you can pick her up from the roost without a fuss.
