Brown Leghorns: Pics, Info, and Resources

Mark Atwood in...one of the carolinas, I can't recall now has the best RC Leghorns in the country and has both Light Brown and Dark Brown in both combs types and both sizes. Look up the American Brown leghorn Club and you should be able tog et in touch with some folks that can point you in the right direction.
He is in NC. A 336 area code. For anyone trying to locate him. He does have gorgeous birds.

Does anyone know if brown leghorns can be sexed by fast feathering? As far as I know, only when crossed, but I have four chicks and two are feathering much quicker than the other two. I got the eggs from "show" birds but I'm suspecting they are not pure because of the difference in feathering.

I know the whites are fairly easy to feather sex by examining the primary and covert wing feathers at only a couple days old. You'll see some slides here:

I understood that you can only feather sex when you cross a slow feathering breed female with a fast feathering breed male. Also there is the theory that females tail feathers will grow in quicker than males.

I got my 15 pullet chicks from Cackle Hatchery Wednesday morning. I have never gotten such energetic chicks by mail before. They jumped out of the box and started eating right away. I tried gro gel for the first time, and will probably keep using it if I do mail order chicks.

I'm really noticing the 'flighty' behavior too. They should be a great addition to my free ranging flock.

That's great. I've noticed regularity and interaction with your chicks as they grow will make them less nervous. Let me know how they do. I've heard good things about Cackle.

Does anyone know if brown leghorns tend to be bullies? We have a couple of white leghorns that started picking at our other chickens (different breeds) and ended up starting a vicious cycle of picking and plucking that affected most of our flock. They're a pretty bedraggled-looking bunch now. We just bought a new mixed batch of 4 different breeds and I'm wondering if the leghorns just need to be separated from other breeds altogether. Thanks!
