Hi,

I have eight 16 month old Rhode Island Reds. For the past 5 weeks, one (or more) of them has been discharging a brown smelly liquid when she lays, fouling the nesting box and ruining any eggs that might be in the box. Every second or third day I have to clean up/lose some eggs.

The discharge is slightly sticky and has the consistency of motor oil. It smells vaguely like a pair of funky underwear.

Also, two of the hens are starting to molt (?), losing feathers on their heads and shoulders.

Any ideas on what is going on? I've searched the forum and looked through my Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens, but can't seem to figure it out.

Thanks.
