Yes, even that one. The barring, even in hatchery birds, should be more distinct. Also, the male Barred Rock is lighter in color than the females. Your bird has the dark coloration of the female. The barring on the tailfeathers runs all together as does the barring on the wing. I also believe that bird has red coloration in the hackle feathers on the other photo.

That would be my guess!

She has the red front part with black back. She seems to have more red than I'm used to seeing, but my guess would be yes that she is a black sex-link pullet.

Well, in a way, but the characteristics of the offspring wouldn't be the same as the parents.

They would come out in different colors, but most would probably be barred. Males and females wouldn't be sex-linked anymore but the hens would probably make excellent layers like their mothers.

They look like a black sex link...remember a black sex link can be made a lot of ways. They have a silver gene mom and a solid colored dad. Usually they are barred rock hen x rhode island red roo. That would mean all of the barred ones are roos.

Do they have the occasional red fleck?
If you breed them back together again you just get barred rock/red mutts. Good layers I'm sure!

Yes, they do have the occasional red fleck. I have been thinking, "What the heck is that?" I embarrassingly must admit I thought they were pooping on each other in the coop at night.

BUT, like I said in an earlier post, I've been wondering why their barring is SO imperfect. When I went out to feed them before dusk, I was looking at them thinking, "That (this thread on BYC) explains a lot." It's like the lightbulb came on after you guys helped me out here today.

I really love y'all and BYC. Thanks.

After I fatten them up really well, they'll be dinner. I'll keep the pullet to be one of my layers, but the boys have to go.

In a way this is good tho' - meat for my freezer and more room for my future Barnevelder - Welsummers - Ameraucanas - BLRWs.
