My one BSL started laying today finally.
Well, I didn't catch her in the box, but coming out she was making a hoot and a holler so I went in excitedly to find that she had torn up four different nest boxes and in the fourth, an broken yolk and white. The shell was on the ground in front of the nest boxes, with about 1/4 of it missing.
I've never had a problem in all my years with egg eating behaviour. Is it more likely that she just had trouble? Because to my understanding, egg eating usually leaves no trace right?

I wouldn't worry. Eating a broken egg is a far cry from egg eating, meaning the practice of breaking them intentionally in order to eat them. I once read here of someone who had kept chickens for years, who routinely broke any very poopy eggs on the foop floor so the chickens could eat them. He never had egg eating going on in his flock.

It sounds to me like she was a bit freaked out by the process of laying an egg, lol. Hopefully she will get used to it, and hopefully she just broke it accidentally. I used to get a soft selled egg with some frequency. Often it would get broken and eaten. I've never had an egg eater, either.
