It's been terribly cold here--way below normal with several ice/snow/sleet storms.. I have a tiny coop made of plywood and hardware cloth, that my stray chicken lives in.. Just before our last ice/snow storm, I wrapped the sides, back and bottom of the 'coop'/cage in bubble wrap that I had saved (for something

). It was the big circle that came with a above ground swimming pool.. Each morning, I 'unwrap' two sides for her.. Well, I am AMAZED that not once has her water (a gal vinegar jug cut in half) been frozen.. a few times it had ice slithers but for three weeks it been in the teens and twenty at night and in the 30's during the day.. The ice in the outside waterer, in the big run, is froze solid almost every morning..

I thought I would share this! My dh thought I had lost my mind.. Now, he can't beleive it either.

I'm scheming a way to make a hoop coop covered in bubble wrap sandwiched between two sheets of 6 mil green house plastic. Just another reason for DH to shake his head.

I'm guessing just the coop. I wouldn't want to wrap the run in all that plastic..... flapping around all over the place.....

Can I insulate inside of my coop with regular bubble wrap then cover it with cardboard ?
