I have been feeding the chickens a good bit of scraps and stuff lately so today I got to thinking....
I scooped up a couple of shovel fulls of gravel (mostly really small). Dumped on the ground in the coop. They have been having a GREAT time scratching and picking for the grit they want.

This is what I was wondering. We live out in the prairie/desert area and I figured they'd get it all by themselves scratching around the yard, no? I figured on a small bag for throwing some in the feed as chicks, and then then just in winter when they don't get out as much.

The chicks won't need it until you start supplementing their feed with treats.
My chickens find all the grit they need in free-ranging even in the wintertime, because our ground is rarely snow covered. If I have to keep them confined for any length of time, say more than one day, I offer them some grit.
