Is there any reason not to just let your chickens drink their water out of a bucket instead of an official "waterer"? It seems so much simpler, easier to clean and refill, and frankly, they seem to prefer it.

That's what this bucket was initially--water for the dogs.....When mine are free ranging, they choose the dog bowl instead of their fancy waterer.
My buckets in question are smaller stainless steel buckets, but they drink out of the five gallon buckets too.....Buckets are fine. You probably just don't see many people setting them out as an option since most buckets would be too tall for them to drink from without some steps or a platform.
