Is there any reason not to just let your chickens drink their water out of a bucket instead of an official "waterer"? It seems so much simpler, easier to clean and refill, and frankly, they seem to prefer it.

When mine are free ranging, they choose the dog bowl instead of their fancy waterer.

Buckets are fine. You probably just don't see many people setting them out as an option since most buckets would be too tall for them to drink from without some steps or a platform.
My buckets in question are smaller stainless steel buckets, but they drink out of the five gallon buckets too.....

If both those work for you, should be fine. Might be a small chance of a chick somehow falling into one and drowning, but if you're not dealing with babies that shouldn't be an issue.
