Our Buckeye cockerel won Grand Champion Large Fowl and Super Grand Champion of the Show at the Drew County Fair today!

Hercules was hatched by Jen Scott in January. Thank you Jen for a wonderful Buckeye cockerel!

Chris, your hens have great shape and height but they seem rather light. Are they really that light or is it the lighting in the picture?

Jim: Congratulations! That is a nice Buckeye cockerel. One can only tell so much from one picture but to me, Hercules appears to have great body type. Type will always win for you. I am curious as to his age & weight (at pic time)?

jenscott: Hey Chris, those Buckeyes are great, but you know what? I wanna see that Barn!!!!!!!

hey yeah, you love barns like I do . . . we r a lot alike -- I knew that. LOL! A little secret: I bought the new place because I loved the three barns . . . it's true. The barns, the pasture, the tractor shed, those sold the place to me. I am gonna get some good pictures of the barns. If the morning light was good tomorrow, I was going to take some. We had good light all week but it is all I can do to get the chores done and get to work on time. I have taken a picture of the side of one barn that I made the first chicken coop (more coops to come):

We also won...
Reserve Grand Champion of Show: Buckeye Pullet
Grand Champion Waterfowl: Brown Chinese young gander
Reserve Waterfowl: Chocolate Muscovy old drake
Champion and Reserve Champion Turkey: Royal Palm

The cockerel was hatched in January 2010.

We have not weighed him yet, but will try in the morning.

We also showed a younger cockerel and pullet out of the bird Jen bought from Chris. The judge liked them, but said they were young. He had a hard time choosing a winner. We showed a Buckeye cock, the two cockerels and 10 pullets. We have thwm entered at the APA State Meet next week in Pine Bluff and next month at Little Rock.

Good point. Some of it is the lighting, but my hens have never been as dark as, of course, my males. I get them as good as I can. I have 3 or 4 hens that are OK in color, not great, but OK. Also, some of those hens are 3 & 4 years old, and they get lighter with age over the years. In fact the oldest hens are almost a wheaten color. The male in the picture is even somewhat washed looking in the sunshine -- he is 3 years old himself.

I've never had a pullet approach the dark color of Laura H's highly decorated pullet from last year (unless it is also black splashed). However, all my males are consistently superb in color-- so much so that I do not have to select them on color. Currently, I do have a couple of hens that are dark & black splashed & I have been eager to breed them (and we'll see what I get).
