If your husband would like to learn more about the Buckeye breed, here are a few links.

Just about everything you could ever read about them is listed in the files section here: http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/AmericanBuckeyeClub/

There is a breeder directory along with much more info here: http://americanbuckeyeclub.blogspot.com/p/breeders-directory.html

A great facebook group about the breed and anything poultry related here: http://www.facebook.com/groups/buckeyechickens/

Any questions you have, feel free to ask on facebook. We are a great group and really enjoy the dark red buckeye breed. Good luck to you and your husband.
Lots of wonderful information! Thank you!

I would like to note that in the past, we have been asked not to post information in this thread leading folks to other forums and websites.

There is more than one Buckeye club. There is more than one Buckeye based Yahoo group.

OutRun Acres, please feel free to contact me privately for further information. There are lots of other places to find good info about Buckeyes other than just those links.

Ok, so how about those Buckeyes?

Who is hatching? Mine aren't laying at all yet (I don't have them under lights.) The only eggs I'm getting are from my trusty White Leghorn girls.

I don't use lights either, and I've noticed that coop placement and window placement makes a big difference when you don't. I've got 4 coops, and 3 have windows/doors on at least two sides, mostly east and south. They are devoid of trees on the window sides. The other only has a door and windows on the east side, and is also in a grove of trees. I consistently get fewer eggs in the winter from that coop. They even head to the roost earlier than the other coops.

I have my first broody of the year, so they must think spring is coming :)

Interesting. My main coop (not the various hoop houses and tractors, which get turned around based on wind angles) has two windows and an open door during the day. The windows face south and north, and the door faces east. So light's not so much an issue I think.

What we are having is freaky weird weather. Wet and 73 degrees one day, dry and 28 the next. The poor hens don't know if they're "punched, bored, or screwed" as my Canuck husband would say. So they're not even thinking of going broody, much less laying an egg.

I may drag an extension cord up there if I don't see any eggs in another couple of weeks, I have chick orders to fill and my numbers of adult birds are down to an all time low, so somebody better start laying something!
