Check out the bags for meat maker chicken feed...the stuff used for feeding meat chickens. The back of the bag will tell you if it is gamebird feed or not. The Fleet Farm stores here in Wi label their gamebird food as such.

It is not "Wild Game Feed," but what I buy is a GAME BIRD starter for young chicks because it has higher protein & has some of that protein by animal sources (it is what you would feed pheasant, turkeys, quail chicks/poults). However, sometimes it can be called a "QUAIL STARTER" or a TURKEY STARTER will do -- both should have 26-30% protein.

Here's some fun for a Monday morning :) Let's play 20 questions!!

What would you call this chicken?

He has a single comb, a tufted head...

Feathered shanks...

and FIVE toes...(also visible on left foot in above picture)

Tell me your thoughts....and I'll let you know what I know...

I use Game Bird Starter, has 27% protein, and does not mention wether it is meat based protein or soy based.
Use it for my poults as well.
I asked the Feed Store manager, and he said meat based feed at 27% does not have anymore protein than soy based 27%............then I felt DUMB.
True, 27% is 27%.
What I do want, is to supplement that with some nice "sawdust" as Dave has shown.

I have a Cochin cross who is similar with the tufted head. Mine has silkie and d'Uccle in it's heritage, it has yellow legs with 5 toes on one foot, the other just 4.

I'm stumped, but suspect multiple breeds contributed. The coloring does make me think Swedish Flower Hen also.
