I have a mixed flock in the Pacific NW: 3 Red Sexlink; 1 Buff Orp.; and 2 Buckeyes. They are 17 mos. old. The Reds and Buffy are steady layers. The 2 Buckeyes have always been inconsistent. Dot lays normal eggs, but sporadically. She stopped laying in November and has not yet started again, although we're in the 50s temp wise and the other girls continue to lay on a daily basis. We do not use supplemental light. Paisley has laid 2 normal eggs, ever, and maybe 6 April Fool's eggs the size of a quarter. All the girls seem healthy and happy. There is no bullying. Dot is one of the more outspoken and curious of the group. Paisley is the opposite. Any ideas?

Lovely flock!

I also don't use supplemental light, and although when I got them, I believed they would produce year round, my three Buckeyes have been on "winter break" for weeks. Out of the blue, yesterday, Beatrix produced an egg -- a very large egg.

In previous winters, all three were more ambitious during the winter months, but I think this crazy weather (50 degrees one day, single-digits the next) has them as befuddled as I am.

BTW, none of my girls has ever produced such a tiny egg!
