Since then, Buckeye has had an occasional seizure (about once every three weeks). This morning, he had a seizure. After his seizure, he went into his post-seizure state, where his head points straight up, his feet forward, and his muscles spasm slightly. This usually lasts 5-10 minutes. This time, it lasted 1 hour before we called the vet. We rushed him in. By the time we got there, he'd been like that for two hours. Our vet gave him some subcutaneous fluids immediately, as well as a dose of Valium. Of course, the whole vet's office was quite interested in his case. He is the first chicken that our vet has treated. She is a large animal vet, so it is understandable. Anyway, after that, we left him there for several hours so they could monitor his progress. They had to give him another dose of Valium while we were gone. We came back, and they prescribed Phenobarb to him. They had to break the tablets into eighths. The following is an actual conversation between my vet and I:
Vet: Here you go.
Me: Why is it empty?
Vet: It isn't.
Me: Are you sure?
Vet: Look closer.
Me: Oh! I kind of see it now...
Such a tiny, tiny little dosage!
I have to give it to him orally once a day. When we got him back, he was very tired and unsteady on his feet. Now he is safely recovering in his "padded cell" (soft sided dog crate, in case he has another seizure).
