Hi!
I know I'm a chicken person, but my younger brother wants to get some budgies! Can you please give me some advice on what genders to get? We are going to get two, so they won't be lonely. Do they need bedding? Favourite toys? What type of treats? Should we get pre bonded ones, or introduce them ourselves? And if so, how do we introduce them? Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!!

Budgies are awesome! Do you want ones you can handle, or are you happy to just enjoy their pretty colors, noise and antics?

Personally, I'm happy just to watch mine interact and enjoy their big cage and toys, so for me, I usually just take in whatever birds need a home, whether male or female. They love bells, swings, natural branches with bark they can peel, natural seed sprays, mirrors, things to climb and things to shred.

If you want to handle it, you want a baby. Handled if you can find one, and plan on spending LOTS of time with it. In a month, when it's very tame, get a second baby, in it's own cage, and repeat. Once they are both very tame and happy playing together outside their cages, you can put both of them together in the bigger cage.

I have one and she so sweet , but the lady I got her from hand raised her so she was already tame...ish, one of her favorite things is taking baths, if you just cup your hands under the running lukewarm water they'll go down and bathe in it and they'll have lots of fun . the lady I got her from said that females are more aggressive than males, I think that's only true around breeding an egg-laying season when she has that protective motherly attitude . My sweeties name is kiwi . Hope you have a great time choosing your little parakeets and naming them! 👍🙂 Hope this helps.

There are many things to consider when getting budgies especially if you are getting more than one. Any time you get more than one they are going to bond stronger to their partner than to you. The best bet you have is to get hand raised babies if you want handleable pets. If you get a male and female pair you will have to consider all the aspects of breeding whether you mean to or not. Same sex pair both ways also have their own challenges. Before you go out on a whim take your time and do some research any parrot including budgies are long term commitments so make sure you are ready for the amount of years this entails. Budgies are one of the most commonly thrown away birds so please keep this in consideration and don’t take the decision lightly

Get one male and one female, they usually get along. I have 2 that are male a female and they rarely fight. They won’t really need bedding except if you want them to lay eggs, but make sure the cage has some perches in there and maybe throw in a couple of sticks from outside as perches, then they get a little taste from the outside. You can also buy a swing, they love swings. It might take a while for them to get used to any toys you put in there since they are probably scary to them, but they aren’t much of a hassle. Except when they flap their wings incredibly fast and start chirping like crazy, that’s when they throw a lot of feathers. Keep them in a social place in the house like the living room. They love hearing conversations and whatever is going on. And maybe, they might repeat some phrases back at you. Buy them a mirror to for fun... :)
