Buff Dewlap Toulouse

I ordered a dozen hatching eggs this spring and now have 6 Buff Dewlap Toulouse goslings. Anyone else here raise this variety? They’re from Ester Run Farm in OH. I look forward to seeing how they develop, some of the flock photos in the website they’re from look like dewlap Toulouse, others looked more like commercial Buffs. Hopefully we got a few good ones. I’ll post them periodically as they grow.

7 weeks have gone by and I am still not seeing dewlaps forming on the “Buff Dewlap Toulouse” hatchlings. I keep some American buff geese and some mixed Embden hybrids and these look identical to those with respect to size and dewlap.

The size and rate of dewlap development is highly individual. Many people assume that with no dewlap after 1 year, must be poor quality. However, I've had geese look like production toulouse until 2-3yo, then suddenly the dewlap and fat rolls form. By the time they are 5yo, hard to tell the difference between those that fully formed by yearling age. Most of the top award show dewlap winners are at least 5yo and I am aware of some that were over 10yo.

This is good to know and I hadn’t considered this as a possibility. I will reserve judgement until they are aged. I will say they have the most docile temperament of any goslings I’ve raised thus far. Very quiet for geese

I've had dewlaps for over 12 years now. In my opinion, they are hands down, the best breed!

I’m looking forward to them. I had a rough start with the hatching eggs I bought… they didn’t like the exact same settings as my embdens and American buff geese eggs.
