Do you have a lot of patience to wait years for this project to yield results?
My project involves the mottled gene, it's not hard to work with. But it takes some time, if you are focusing on any other traits besides color. Since you want them to wind up as Cochins, you would have several traits to account for.
Large Fowl Cochins? Then you would have to spend time getting the size back up to their XL standard. That's something so easy to lose.
When I first mixed mine, I contented myself to have Splits (Mottled carriers) rather than full mottled for the first 3 generations or so. Full Mottled can be achieved sooner, by the F2s, but if I had that on the front burner I would have easier to lose traits on the back burner. I am only just this season putting together a pen of Full Mottled birds of sufficient size, floof, correct combs, now 3-4 years in. I consider this the halfway point.
Your project is complicated by Buff. It's supposed to be influenced by several genes and reportedly one of the harder colors to work with. I don't have any experience with it though to say for sure.
