I'm getting buff orp hens and I have the choice between a buff rooster or a lavender rooster. All hatchery stock, American orps as far as I know. I do plan on letting hens raise chicks, so I was curious if there is any difference in buff vs lavender roosters for maintaining a healthy flock. The only lav issue I know of is the shredded feather gene. Is one color more likely to produce broody offspring? I don't have a color preference, as I plan on eating all the birds at some point (self-sustaining homestead flock). I know I'll probably have to add new birds/genetics every few years as well. Thanks

I don't know the exact answer, but my blue rooster was super mean We ended up selling him. The hens were also ruder than any of my buff girls ever were. But overall, they are the same breed so most likely it wont really matter the color.

As much as I love the lavender color, they just have never worked out for me. My roosters are always extremely mean whereas buff roosters are very docile. It’s very strange considering that they are the same breed, but that is the experience that I have had.
