Buff Orfington?

One of my neighbors Bufff Orfington hens died. Her feathers across her shoulders turned dark. Anyone know what it could be?

i cant imagion anything that would turn feathers dark, or light for that matter! i doubt that the feather color hd anything to do with the death. Buff Orpingtons dont like it very very hot, we lost 4 last summer from the heat.
