I'm not going to post pics of these chicks, but I just have a question in general about different breeds.

I just got 26 rainbow layers from McMurray on Monday, and am eagerly trying to guess breeds of birds. I have 3 little buff babies, and I am curious as to the differences in appearance between buff orpingtons and buff rocks. Is there an obvious way to tell the difference between the two? I'm sure when they're newly hatched, it is difficult, but as I watch them grow I'd like to know what to watch for in identifying their breeds. I know there are other buff varieties of birds, but these two have me stumped.

I have 4 little white babies. Same question as above. I can tell a leghorn, we've had enough of those and they are obviously very different than the larger bodied white birds. What characteristics set white rocks, white orpingtons and white giants apart?

Orpingtons have white legs and rocks have yellow or black legs. This wont show up till they are older though. The orps will have the yellow legs till about 8 weeks and then they will gradually change to white. Does MM have buff rocks? I didnt think they were too prevelant.

The white giants look like they have a lot of black on them as chicks. (I got that from looking in the catalog)

MM does have buff rocks. I've had two white JG's from McMurray, and both started as black. One of my black chicks' wing feathers are coming in black, but there is a white feather in each wing. The catalog says black JG chicks white feathering "will persist until final molt of chick feathers takes place." Not sure if this chick is a JG, but that's what I'm guessing right now.

Thanks for the answers about buff rocks and orps.
