Hello, I have two Buff Orp hens & am considering getting a rooster. Was wondering if Buff Orp roosters are as sweet & docile as my hens??? My main concern is having a noisy & loud rooster, as my hens are fairly quiet. While I understand that roosters are gonna crow, I'd like to have one that might not be so vocal & loud. Thanks.

Even one rooster is going to overbreed your hens to the point of harm. A rooster can handle 8-10 hens. You may want to add girls at the same time. There is always a glut of roosters available because people want hens and/or can't have roosters where they live. Sometimes some really nice roos are available cheaply on the buy, sell, trade threads. You have to have 20 posts before you can participate.

Thanks. I'm knew to chicken raising, although I grew up with tons of chickens, my uncle raised chickens, I never really paid attention to them other than feeding them & collecting eggs. What are cochins??? I may wait on getting a rooster because I only have 3 hens, 2 Buff Orps & 1 Black Sex Link, & was advised that a rooster would over breed them to the point of causing them harm. I was informed that I need 8-10 hens if I got a rooster. Thank you.

I loved my BO rooster. I could pick him up and carry him no problem. He did go after my 8 year old once (her fault she came up from behind and startled him) but was quick to calm when I stepped in and didn't actually hurt her. He didn't crow very loudly or often and actually stopped during the winter. I do agree you would want more hens, even with 5 hens one was pretty beat up and I just had the one roo.
As a bonus he was a big, BEAUTIFUL bird. He was something to look at for sure. I have 3 babies in the brooder and if none are boys I plan on getting another BO rooster

Thank you for the advice, I'm gonna hold off on getting a rooster, but when I do, I'm definetly gonna get a BO rooster. Thanks again.
