The last few days my 8 month old Buff Orphington has been under the weather, not coming out of the coop, and while normally the chicken will avoid being picked up, I'm now able to move her around and put her in a little cozy container without any fuss. She seems pretty sick and I'm wondering what it might be. Does she have a cold? Its been close to 0 Deg F the last week. They are in a warm coop and none of my other chickens are sick.

Her right eye and nostril appear irritated with some mucous on her nostril.

Ideas?

Doesn't seem to be that bad. Do you have some VetRX? She may just have some sinus irritation, caused by dust.

I'd offer some vitamins to incase it's vitamin A deficiency, which can cause sticky mucusy eyes, & nostrils.

Sadly, chickens don’t get ‘colds’ like us humans. There’s are caused by diseases such as Mycoplasma Gallisepticum (MG) or Infectious Coryza.

  1. What are her symptoms exactly?
  2. Is she sneezing or coughing?
  3. How old is she?
  4. Does she currently lay? If so, when did she last lay an egg?
  5. Is she breathing oddly or having any difficulty breathing?
  6. Any ocular or nasal discharge from her nares (nostrils) or eyes? Such as bubbles, foamy, watery or sticky eyes?

Symptoms are a bit vague, can you tell us more?

Check to make sure her crop is emptying overnight, look for lice/mites, does she lay eggs what are those like, what's the poop like, is there any bloat or fluid in the abdomen below the vent between her legs, is there coughing/sneezing/bubbles from the eyes, can she walk/any mobility issues.

Rinse out the eye with saline, see if she's got any debris in it. Clear away the mucous from her nostril - see if comes back. Look inside her beak for canker, mucous or yellow/white pasty material.

Work on hydration first electrolytes for a few hours if you have them, then switch to plain water. Once hydrated, then offer food.
