Our family lives in North Florida and is new to chicken raising. We have three chickens that are 38 1/2 weeks old. They are in a very nice pen with all the amenities a chicken would want. Two of the chickens, one Wyandotte and one Rhode Island Red, have been laying for some time now. The Buff Orphington has yet to lay. She seems to be attached to the Wyandotte when she lays. Always standing guard right at the nesting box when she lays. Could she still lay after 38 1/2 weeks old?

Welcome to Backyard Chickens!

Some breeds take longer to lay. I have heard of 60 weeks for some.

Chickens are light sensitive and it is low light time in the Northern Hemisphere. Your girl will likely start laying right at the winter solstice or a week or two after that.

G’Day from down under Linda :frow Welcome!

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

If you would like to share pictures and stories of your flock, you have come to the right place. BYC’ers never tire of these and do not back away slowly or commence eye rolling when the photo album or home videos come out ;)
