We've just discovered one of the Buff Orpingtons in our flock has a bad injury under her wing. We haven't noticed her in pain and if her wing is down you cannot see the wound. But once picking her up and looking (I noticed she had what looked like a wet feather) this looks pretty bad. This is way worse than a surface wound which we'd just clean up and let heal. I don't even think I should put anything in there as it's that deep and right to the meat. Thoughts? Opinions?

It's winter here and we get it pretty hard. So it's currently cold with no bugs out otherwise I'm sure she'd be infested. Not sure if I should treat it or cull her? Bad thing is it's one of our daughters favorites. No idea how she got it this injury either, they free range during the day so assume something happened then. Thanks.

:welcome Do you have a rooster? That looks like an injury caused by a rooster's spur or toenails. I would treat with a topical antibiotic ointment and separate the rooster from the flock until she is healed - it will take time.

Thank you, yes we have a Delaware rooster so it's quite possible. So even if there is a gap between the skin and meat you'd still treat it with a topical? Is it possible to even close the wound?

EDIT: well we sprayed a topical antiseptic on there. didn't use triple antibiotic ointment as it would have needed a half of tube to cover it and its very deep. you were right too, it's very likely from our rooster, some other birds have much smaller scabs. this buffs wounds are much much worse than the others. we'll see what happens, I'm glad it's winter and no bugs.
