After determining (thanks to everyone here!) that 3 of the 4 eggs we incubated were roosters, we rehomed them and bought two chicks from a local store that are supposed to be guaranteed hens. We're thinking this Buff Orpington is looking a bit roo-like. S/he is 7-8 weeks old. Are we wrong? Please? My kids are going to be so upset if we have to give away another chicken.

Most likely a cockerel.

If you really want guaranteed hens, I suggest getting adult hens that are laying or really close to laying.

Yeah but when that baby chick dies or turns out to be an unwanted male then ya gotta either tell em the truth or lie lol. My yougins love our clutches raised but love nameing the adults and messing with them too.

If one is worried about sickly birds then keep them isolated for a week or two and see if anything pops up. If it isnt a breed that is able to be sexed early on you can count on stags and most of the time more than pullets it comes with the territory.

Also ima say you have some cockrels yet again. Saddle and hackle feathers will be more noticeable once they are abit older.

One/Two weeks will not do anything. One month at the least is recommend.Chickens are great at masking diseases so just because they look fine means there actually fine. Besides a lot of people dont know how to do a actual quarantine.Keeping them on the other side of the property is not enough.
