Welcome to the Buff Orp thread ! Hatcheries differ. I am glad you are pleased with yours. If you want to see really big ones go to my page. None of these birds are over 8 mos old in the photos. That Cockerel weighed 14 lbs at 8 mos, and the pullets from 8 1/2 - 9 1/2 lbs at 9 months. These are English and Standard of Perfection birds. They usually are lots larger than hatchery birds.. . . a little FYI. I am on my second flock of BO's. A couple of years ago, I purchased my first flock (my very first chickens ever) of BOs from the local feed store and I thought they were pretty huge. This summer I purchased a second flock of BOs from Welp Hatchery and have been very satisfied. They started laying on New Years day 2013 at 27 weeks. At 27 weeks they are quite a bit larger than my first flock of feed store BOs.
Anyways, BOs are super sweet, cute, and fluffly -- and I;m getting eggs in the winter -- what a deal!
I have some lovely 100% EBO, 9-12 week old shippable cockerels looking for homes, if you want to get started !Currently, I have 1 roo, 1 cockrel, 5 hens and 15 pullets - all BOs. The youngsters are from Welp. I'm located in what is considered the high desert (I call it the mountains) above Palm Springs in Southern California.
BTW, I love your chickens. They are beautiful. I've seen pics of English Orps before and they are a bit different than what I've seen of their American counterparts. Their tails are different. Eventually, I'd like to make a change over to the English variety.
That is one intimidating rooster! Ha ha ha, good picture ladyrsanti.
She is beautiful - I am jealous! Free awesome

I have to be honest I have the English bug but still agree with great birds from US. Orpingtons both US and English have stolen my heart. Trying to keep the English from stealing my walletRight now the UK Orp is what everyone wants here on this site. It is nice to see a well bred APA Orp to compare to these Imports.
I wish I could take credit for her breeding. I went to our Boone County 4-H Club seminar Sat where I was offered her for free. I insisted on making a $20 donation to the club. And then thought maybe I should offer $25, but her breeder said $20 is more then enough.. And know her breeder very well. And it is people like him in the hobby that makes it so much fun to raise nice quality birds without breakin into a bank to afford them. I WISH MORE HERE WERE LIKE HIM.
She will be given the royal treatment her like she deserves.
Thank you for the kind thoughts. And remember good things happen to good people.
