*Buff Orpington Thread!*

Looks like a pullet to me. All of them do, actually.

if you had a Roo it should be crowing by 24 weeks. Check around to see if you can find a Roo through this site or Craig's list.
When my BO's were starting to mature I found a video out of Canada where it showed the difference between young BO pullets and Roo's. Pullets have, no pun intended, big rear ends, all filled in. Roo's on the other hand have something obviously missing in that department.

Hello everyone!

I have two Buff Orps. They are probably one of my favorite breeds. I have owned five of them over the last few years, and they are so tame and sweet. And excellent mothers.

The two that I have now are 15 months old, and I got them both from Meyer Hatchery. One of them lives in the house, due to some difficulties when she was young. (You can read all about it here if you're interested in learning what happened: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...mics-wet-fowl-pox-an-important-lesson-learned ) This happened a year ago, and she is now thriving. A lot of people think it's crazy that I have her in the house with us, but she has won the hearts of many people.

This is Sunni:

And this is Daffodil, my Buff Orp that lives outside:

Daffodil is very sweet, but she's also very shy. And from observing the girls, she seems to be at the bottom of the pecking order. The other girls aren't mean to her or anything, but she seems to spend more time away from the other girls, and she never gets first pick on the nest boxes, treats, etc. But she seems happy enough.

From what I have read, Orps tend to be on the bottom of the pecking order more than other breeds. Is that true? I had so many chickens back when I had my other three orps, that it was hard to know if they were at the bottom of the order or not.

I started with Orps and then brought in the Leghorns and they seemed to stay at the top. Which is good because I refer to my Leghorns as white tornadoes and they pick on my Australorps terribly.

Their docile personality does fit the bill for bottom of the pecking order, but so far mine are holding their own. Your girls are just lovely :)
