Henrietta is the queen in the hen house.

Good morning Henrietta, you are a pretty little thing. :)

Wow! I can't believe that everyone is in a separate nesting box this morning. This is monumental for our girls as they normally fuss over the first nesting box every morning. Six nesting boxes for three chickens and they normally fight over the first one. They must be in the Christmas spirit!

LOL, one of them must be the queen and pus the others in their place

Don't worry, I know exactly what you mean. He even sits with the girls when they are laying, he just cuddles up next to them and then clucks once they are done.

Omg one of our Buff Orph roo's, Bruno, does the same thing with the ladies. Also observed him once crawl in a nest box after a hen was struggling to lay. He clucked at her while he scratched out the nest for her, this went on for about 5 minutes while she rested on the perch. They coo'd and clucked at each other, then he got out and she got back in.

Here is a shot off him waiting on an egg......

Like anything else it depends on what you are getting and where you get it from. You can buy hatchery birds quite cheap and if you don't so much about type or color they are just fine for a backyard flock. Birds from breeders will of course cost more.

also these are big birds and they eat a lot. I hatched about 30 last spring and only kept a trio to breed from, along with one cockerel that went to my breeding partner. I did sell a few that were decent quality, just not as good as the ones I kept. I sold them for $40 at 6-7 months of age. I feed certified organic feed and that probably did not cover the cost of raising them. I ate quite  a few too because they had major faults or DQs that I did not want to send out into the world.

$40-$60 seems to be the going rate around here for almost any 4-12 month old standard bred large fowl. Of course it depends on the breed and whether or not the breeder is showing and winning. Birds related to big winners go for more.

Uhhh funny here are some shots of our boys.....I think they are quite pretty and they are hatchery stock. I am sure they don't fit some kind if breed standard, but we don't care. They are a great duo of roo's and are complete gentleman.

Here are my girls :) Nugget is the "fluffy" one in the back. Frita is the smaller one in the front. She's been laying for almost a month. Nothing from Nugget yet. They are 29 weeks old. :)
