Buff Orpingtons/Barred Rock

I love all of the insight and personality descriptions! Thank you all so much!

I will definitely have to show off the coop when it's complete and the babies when they arrive!

***So Excited!***

And it's good to know that the roosters aren't outragiously aggressive!
A friend of mine had a mixed roo, and you want to talk about a meanie!? That was him alright!

i have two BO's and 3 BR's in my flock now and have 2 more of each in the brooder getting bigger as we speak. my two fav birds and the most reliable in my flock for laying through the winter. BR's don't like to be handled. BO's don't mind it as much but still don't hop up and beg for attention. the SS are the only ones to do that.

i have a barred rock rooster who is friendlier than his little BR girlfriend (though she is bullied by the Isa Brows so she's a nervous wreck) and the Isa Browns.
He follows me around the yard, knowing i have no food, just wanting to sticky beak and be near me. He'll let me pat him, but he doesn't like it too much so i don't. The little girl's a sweetie too, once they get their own little pen together i'm sure she'll be so much less skittish and let me touch her (she follows me around now if the other hens aren't near by).
They're hugely curious about everything i do!
There's a hip-height piece of metal that blocks the sight of one half of the pen from the other but when i'm in with the silkie girls on the other side, the BR rooster (Jeff) stands on a drum so he can see what i'm doing. Very friendly and handsom

I LOVE barred rocks and would love more!

imthedude - May I ask what SS is the abbreviation for?

HelenaJean - That is so funny that he follows you around like that! I'm so excited to get them!

We're newbies as well, and BO's were the first breed I really knew about so had to have some...we now have 2 BO's and 2 BR's among others. They are only a week old, so we look forward to seeing the hens they grow into - but I can say that out of all the chickens, the two BO's are by far the most fearless. When we walk up to the brooder (a giant dog crate converted) they are the first to runnnn forward, almost like they're protecting the flock. It's really cute. One hopped into my hand yesterday, when the rest like to scatter when we come to visit (at first, then they become more bold and all run forward haha). I love those little BO's - though they are the hardest to name bc we can barely tell the two apart (named Olivia and Orchid but we are constantly getting them mixed up!)

That is the most adorable thing ever! I'm going to have to ban myself from BYC until I get my babies, for fear of exploding from excitment, haha!

Good luck with your feather babies! I'm interested to know the personalities they grow into!

We had a BR last summer that had the BIGGEST attitude!! She definitely stuck out from the rest of the chickens, lol. After being picked on by everyone else we had to separate her and she became our baby. She liked to be held and walked around the yard, she loved all the special treats she got so when you came outside she came running for us, she even talked to us as she was walking around, and if she was in trouble with the other chickens she ran straight to us for protection. Out of all my chickens, she was definitely my favorite. I miss her

I have one BO and about 15 BRs, including a BR roo. The BO is a very 'unchicken-y' chicken. She is NOT a flock bird, she'd rather be on her own. She will occasionally come to me when she wants to and allow me to hold/pet her. She has quite a loud egg song. I can't comment on if this is normal, because I don't know.

I have 2 elderly BRs (all my BRs are named Doris), that will peck your pants until you pet them. They are the only 2 that will do this. I got them from a rescue and I have no idea why they peck your pants, but they do. The 'new' (1 yr old) BRs are a pretty much brainless little group but they are okay. I still have a few who will escape the fence to scratch up my garden. Don't EVER raise them where you don't want them! I should have taken them up to the coop when they were younger, while still in the chicken tractor/brooder....but since I raised them close to my house, I even still, after a year, have a handful that escape and tear up my garden. It's due to my own mistake that they aren't my favorites. However, the 2 'old' Dorises are among my favorite birds, so maybe with a little time, these new Dorises will calm down more.

As far as the BR roo, Milton, he is a calm bird and friendly for a roo.

I think for the most part, if you consistently handle your chicks, you're going to have good pet chickens.
