buff orpingtons..

Currently my BO, Bunny, is being a major PIA. She sits in the empty nest box having laid her egg on the floor of the coop and screeches in this weird robo-bird sound at the others trying to come in and lay. She also bullies all the rest during treat handout, also making robo-bird noise (image the sound of a loose belt on your car) while fluffing up.

I'd think she's broody but it's irrelevant to her whether or not she has eggs to sit on and she continues to lay on a regular basis. She's just decided to be queen of the nest box and nobody, but nobody, else gets in.

Yesterday she had to spend some time in the Naughty Pen. It seemed to help a bit.

She may be spending more time there.

And BO's have a great will to live!!

Our BO "Hop Scotch" arrived in mid-February from the hatchery. The box arrived a day late. Unfortunately, her box mates didn't survive the President's Day layover in the cold USPS quarters. When we put the box under the heat lamp she fluttered her wing. Soon she sipped water, then began to eat and finally hopped around.

Shortly thereafter, toes on one leg started to curl, then turn black. Eventually, the toes and the shank died and later fell off (or was consumed).

Long story short ...

Hop Scotch is 8+ weeks old, half-size (probably from eating so little during the first weeks), missing her right shank, with a deformed wing on the same side. When she flaps her wings, she pirouettes in a circle on her one leg. She's learned to drink from a nipple waterer which is quite a feat for a one-legged chicken!

During a recent hot spell, she spent some time in the garden with me. As long as other chicks don't pick on her, I think she might be ok! Right now she's in the brood area (7' x 8'), in a little separate pen at the same level as the 4 week old chicks. They all know each other. I'll try placing her in their nursery area in another week or so.

Buff Orpingtons are great!

I have around 20 or 30 BOs and they are very sweet chickens I have 1 BO hen named Sunshine and if she wants me to pet her or feed her etc she pecks my leg ...?

But she is a very sweet chicken I could go on ... and on and on about my differnt Buff Orpingtons that
are my pets ... but I won't! But the only thing I HATE about the Buff Orpingtons is that they're HORRIBLE MOTHERS!!! I had a hen set on eggs and hatch them out then kill them and eat them!!!!

That's why I try not to let them set, they aren't good mothers at all. I've just about given up letting a hen raise the chicks because she either cracks abunch of the eggs or she eats them or she kills them when they hatch! Why do they do that???????? I'm just gonna stick with the incubator!

It's in games, jokes and fun. I should have named it poultry poetry (say 5 times fast) because I've seen some very cute poems about ducks and geese around here.

I am a new chicken owner to. I have to say out of the five chickens we have, everyone being a different breed, my buff orphington is the freindliest and sweetest thing. She comes right up to me when I call her name and she is only 4 weeks old. They say they are freindly and make the best pets. I have to say they are right. I love her. Buttercup is Moms chicken and she is the best.
