Buff Orpington's?

I have 26 nearly year old pullets, all BO's. We ordered 15 more BO's from a nearby hatchery - 5 boys, 10 girls (1 died shortly after we got them) they're currently 3 weeks old and I'm not sure if they are all BO's.

Your thoughts? Maybe we have more boys than girls and that's why the colors are different? The lighter one is supposed to be a girl, but "her" comb seems more developed. I'm going to be very disappointed if they aren't BO's as the reason we got these new kids is so that we can hatch our own and we want them to be BO's! Our first batch was all consistent with their coloring, so I'm confused!

That drak red one, is not a BO. Could be production red of some kind. That other BO the lighter one with the cob that looks like a roo to me.


Oh and no BOs are all the same color the males will look the same as the females. Only chicks that can be really sexed by color are sex link chicks. Like Red Stars, Black Stars, Amber links ect..

That's what I was thinking too. I'm very disappointed in this hatchery!! I wish we had ordered from Murray McMurray again!!

I'd rather not say until I know for sure what I want to do - as we were very specific in what we wanted - and I understand that sexing breeds may be more difficult - I have at least 3 of the 14 that are NOT BO's and at least 1 of the pullets that's a cockerel (so rather than 10 pullets, 5 cockerels, I have 8 & 6) I'm rather disappointed. You'd think a hatchery would get it right.

see if they will refund you the money from the miss sexed ones and the wrong breed ones. You can always try again from another hatchery.

We definitely don't want more than what we currently have but I intend on asking for our money back from the at least 3 that are not BO's - here's another picture of them all. The three that are not BO's have a lot more developed feathering/tail feathers. I don't know what I'm going to do with them yet - give them away or have them for dinner when they're bigger.

Well i know a small hatchery were you can get 4 or less chicks pending where you live if you want more BO pullets.

We still have at least 6 pullets - and we didn't even need more of them - we just wanted a couple roosters and ended up getting 14. So, we're up to 40 total, lol! We want to breed BO's so we won't have to buy more - but thank you for that link!!

Update - they're New Hampshire Reds. The hatchery admitted to messing up and refunded the money for the 3 that aren't BO's. We decided to keep them for now.
