I am new to backyard chickens and have 4 lovely Buff Orps that are 6 months old. In the past week or so they have started pecking at the wood fence in their run and along part of our yard. The weather is getting colder here (we are outside of Boston), and I've wondered if they're going after bugs or something. I just can't figure out why they're doing it and the damage they are doing to the fence is really starting to show. I'm not sure how to stop this behavior - any thoughts?? Thanks!

My chickens peck at the vinyl siding at times. Who knows why?

If I sweep wood chips out of the door of the shop, they will come eat them.

They must be finding something to attract them to the fence. Short of covering the fence or fencing it off from the chickens, keeping the chickens put up may be the only solution. Overall, I would not worry about them pecking at the fence.
