Considering a dozen of buff Orpington chicks because I have the room the set up and desire to raise and breed meat chickens. Any advice? Are they a good choice? Temperament and info on the breed is appreciated. Ty in advance. Background info. I have a small flock of 4 white leghorn hens 1 production red Roo who free-range and roost at night in the barn. Also 6 assorted pullets still inside.

Good I am glad ur considering getting buff are are dual purpose breed though which means they lay eggs and can be dinner lol but there not the best at either hope this helps

Orpington are considered "dual" purpose, do grow "large" & lay, however I keep mine for their calm/docile personalities & eggs. If you're after "meat" birds, there are other breeds, check on hatchery websites for meat birds.

Some dual purpose breeds can be very good at meat and eggs with proper breeding. Hatchery stock isn't going to cut the mustard for meat in most cases, but you can eat any chicken. Might just have to cook 2 instead of 1 big plump Cornish X.

Orpingtons from a hatchery might make an ok fryer around 16 weeks. Don't expect plump breasts, but good size for frying.

I prefer faster growing breeds like New Hampshires or Delewares. Well bred strains can put on decent meat at a good rate and keep you in eggs.
