Bugs Leeching Off of My Duck? Please Help!!

Lice and mites are sometimes found all over the body.

Agree, yes, treat the duck, and perhethrin should treat lice, fleas, roost mites, but in some parts of the country the Northern Fowl Mite is resistant to permethrin. :(

Yes, clean area and spray with permethrin.
It would be a really bad case if the lices and mites are found all over the body. I should have slid the word "generally" in there as that is what I meant.

Yes, I know that the fowl mite is becoming more resistant. If the OP hasn't started any treatment, yet, they won't know what they are dealing with.

Sorry, I guess I should have said that the different species of lice live on different parts of the body and that mites don't live just near the vent.

Yeah, they need to take a close look at the bugs, though it doesn't really matter because treatment is the same for lice, mites, and fleas, it's permethrin or any other product labeled for use on poultry.

Hello everyone!

It's been a while since I've posted my concerns, which I believe is a good thing because it means my duck has been growing steadily and healthily. However recently I, along with my siblings, have noticed that there are these bugs crawling around on my duck's feathers. Initially, we were unconcerned because we do keep him outside on the grass for most of the day, so we thought that it was just some grass creatures that have made their way onto him. BUT, over the span of a week or so, we slowly began noticing that he was carrying way more than a few on his body. When I sneak in some cuddle time with him, I noticed multiple creatures crawling all his body, one even tried to sneak into his eye! I managed to take out the one that was approaching his eye, but when I try to pick out the others, they just burrow further into his feathers! It's been a very frustrating task and it hurts me to see him so distraught. He's been grooming for way more than usual, and I'm sure that this can be chalked up to those pesky bugs! I'm scared that these bugs are biting him or are slowly chomping off at his skin. I don't want to even think about what happens if these bugs crawl into his eye and aren't as docile as I first imagined! Please help! I know that there isn't a possible way to exterminate them all form my lawn, but I was wondering if there is a bathless cleanser for ducks that wouldn't affect his feathers? Just to let you know, I let him bathe twice a day in a pool of water but it doesn't seem to help against the bugs. Please help!

Thank You,

I'm having same issue

I'm having same problem even getting bit.

Poultry dust found at most feed stores to dust get a large grocery bag or trash bad put dust into the bag place the duck, chicken etc into the bag feet first with the head sticking out. Close the bag around the neck Hold the bird from under also so it's not hanging by it's neck then shake the bag so the dust is all over them, this also protects you and them from inhaling the dust. Waterfowl usually can keep themselves free of parasites if the have water to bathe in daily. But if you have other poultry I assume they can pick up mites and lice from them, I've had 2X mites on my birds and in my coop, both times it was the chickens, None of the waterfowl had them, but when you get mites on your birds not only do they need to be treated but also the coop needs to be treated. so outcomes all the bedding and you use something to spray down the walls ceilings flooring roosts if you have chickens, and do it early in the day so it all dries and airs out by time everyone starts in for the night. I found Neem oil mixed with warm water in a sprayer worked really well and it's safe to use around the birds and you. Neem can be found in garden centers or on line. I used a pump garden sprayer, be sure to spray into every crevice in your coop and make sure to carry off the bedding because if you dump it outside then you still have mites or lice.
@courtney91 can you tell by the photos what your dealing with?
and Welcome to BYC.
