Bugs

Up here from spring in March or April until October or some years even as late as December we will get tons of bugs. I think we breed mosquitos to be bigger and meaner than most other states. We also have lots of types of flies as well as crawly bugs and worms. My chickens eat bugs of any kind they can find. They also will eat frogs, small mice and rat babies, lizards and pretty much anything else they can get their little beaks on. This year we added ducks and they are even better. They will grab the mosquitos out of the sky as they are flying around.

As a negative though we do have a very harsh winter (40 below sometimes) from December usually until March or April, sometimes longer depending on the year so during those months I have to feed grain, sunflower seeds and I make fatcakes for them to help them make it through the long winter.

Sorry if this is a silly question, but what are fat cakes?
It's what my gram calls them they are made with peanut butter and seeds usually sunflower and other nuts like that. It's a good protein boost and has a little added fat to help in the winter when they need extra energy.

how many? not a clue but they eat them all day long ;) when hubby is mowing the grass they will follow behind the mower and catch the crickets and grasshoppers that pop up. i wouldn't even begin to know how to measure the amount. but they also like lizards and frogs!
