Can anyone tell me if lice start out as big bugs on the hen. and then do they lay small lice? i always pick up my hens and look through their feathers but noticed bugs, im a hairdresser and they appear to be similar to a louse ready to lay, so am i on the right track here, anyone got any suggestions. iwas going to get some powder which i normally use but have been consumed with a dog that had to have his leg amputated.

As for the lice, from what I understand and have seen on a chicken (not mine) they are small white to greyish bugs.
If there is something on your hens... I would treat it right away.
Dusting with DE or I have heard Sevin-5 dust gets rid of them.
Sevin-5 is not marketed to be used on chickens, but just about everyone on BYC swears by it. I have used Sevin-5 on my dog for fleas and it works very well. I got my can at Wal-Mart in the garden department for about $6.00.
I keep DE in my coop at all times. When I clean out the coop I sprinkle the DE all over the floor and mix it into the pine shavings too, this seems to help keep the ant population down and I have yet to see any lice on my chickens so far.
Good luck and hope you get your bug problem fixed.
