fleas spent 90% of their time off of the host so treat the environment too. While they are in the egg stage they are resistant to insecticide, so you will have to bomb the environment several times. Good Luck!

i gonna hit the area with 20 pounds of seven dust!!!
then i gonna move the whole flock to a new location and treat tthe bird in a quarinteen area
thanks i hope it all works

I would definitely try the DE. I am a 1st yr "chicken mama" but i swear by the stuff! I sprinkle it in the coop and on their roosts and never had a single bug all summer. I even sprinkle it in our outdoor cats' food as a de-wormer.I don't use any pesticides as our property is 100% organic and DE is a safe option.Good luck!

Thank you i will use that too

it makes me sad to see my poor birds hurting and infested :(

I have the exact same things on my 2 leghorns. We've used food grade DE on one infected hen about a month ago. Now two have it. We frequently spread DE through pen and run. Yesterday, I dusted each hen and rooster completely as well as their pen. One forum reader suggested Vaseline. I tried that only on the one that appeared the worst. Poor thing looks terrible as the Vaseline attracted the dirt when she did her dirt bath. As a result, I can't tell if it's killed any of these things. She seems to shake her head every now and then and so I assume she still has some. Couple that with moulting, she looks pitiful. I feel like I should give her a bath, or shall I let her be?

Any ideas?

Today I noticed my buff Orpington wasn't acting right. After examining her I noticed her vent was irratated and white little bugs around it and clumps on her feathers around the vent. I checked the rest of the flock and one other had the same problem but not near as bad. First experience with this- any suggestions?

We did the Swipe and DE dusting a few weeks ago. Now it looks like the stickfleas are back. We're going to try Vectra for cats & dogs. I saw that Frontline was recommended. Frontline no longer works for the fleas on out dogs and cats, so I'll try Vectra on the chicks. Three drops on each one. We'll see what happens.

I just saw this post and saw you were in Fla. Was going to say stick fleas! Those buggars are just awful!!! You can hardly pull them off! We used paramite dip on our dogs, sevin dust or spray for housing and premise. For the chickens, FLY RID Plus spray by Duravet should work well. 0.5% Permethrin, labeled for poultry. If you have been dusting the birds, the fleas might be migrating to the head. You can use the Fly Rid on a cotton swab to treat the head and face. I don't miss those bugs!
