Dad had chickens when I was in my teens, and I really enjoyed having them. 40yrs later, I'm getting the itch. This site has been a invaluable source of info. My wife is a "if it doesn't have a (whatever store you have in you area) label on it, I'm not eating it. However, I snuck in some fresh brown eggs, and made her a omelet. She loved it... so I told her I used fresh local eggs. She said we need chickens.

I've have a good friend who is going to raise the chicks until there ready to be outside without heat. So i have 6 buff orp's being delivered to him on Monday, so I figured I need to get a coop/run started, as I'll be needing it in a couple months.

So after asking a bunch of questions and starting a few threads to gain as much info as I could. I figured it was time to jump in feet first.

Coop... 6x8 slant roof. Run will be a hoop style, attached to the coop.

Picked up the framing lumber from a local saw mill.

Framed out the floor. I forgot to dig out my 6x6's... I'll attach them before framing the walls.

Sheathed, liquid nails waiting for the vinyl flooring.

Vinyl glued down. That's it for tonight. Supposed to get a storm, so I'll be plowing instead of building.

As am I, lol. I'm fairly handy, and have a decent grasp on building. However, I'm far from being a builder. Still not sure what I'm using for siding. Might do board n batten.

Might I suggest metal siding for the coop and roof. In my area it was cheaper than board and batten. and last longer too.

My only concern is heat in the summer. I don't have any larger trees in my yard that are not next to the house, and I definitely don't want to coop 20' from the house.

Metal is not that bad. I put in 20+ eve vents in my roof, plus 4 windows for ventilation as well as the pop door and full sized door.

That does look great. My shop has very old T-11 that is starting to peal. We definitely don't want metal siding on the shop, as the patio faces the shop, and B&B would really look good and more aesthetically pleasing. So I'm probably going to match the coop to the shop. I've got a local saw mill that is rather inexpensive. Ruff cut 1x8x8 is only $2.25.
