Build your coop before chicks arrive

I'm with you, I don't think I will ever do chicks in the house again. I'm still cleaning up the dust! It coated everything within a 10 ft radius.

Luckily I put my chicks in a brooder in DD closet, since she has the biggest one, and that is away from the rest of the house.

I didn't have the coop done before the chicks were ready to go out so we had a temp pen built into the little nook of the house. Three sides were house and wire in the front and top. Woked pretty good although now we are putting vinyl siding on the house and the temp pen had to go. We finished th big coop and the 6 ladies 16 weekers are in there and then I used part of the other to make a shipping crate into a tractor like pen to put the 3 EE, 8 weeks, in and NOW they are living with 10 more little chicks!!!

I really need to get everyone in the same place before winter sets in although I did buy some things to insulate the younger ones crate if I have to. The BR is the ruler of the coop and for some reason doesn't really like the others when we tried to integrate them!!

Before the white dust I had the down coating everything. I'm still cleaning the white dust, but sure wish I had an industrial strength blower fan like a jet engine to blow the dust out the open doors and windows It seems like I'm just moving it around!

We built after but but we had them contained in the garage. The just went in the coop last Sunday. Still need to put in nest boxes but they are only 3 1/2 weeks old so we can do that later. Still hubby said they were going to be out there Sunday one way or the other. He worked very hard. We still have to build the run too but they have a roomy house to run around in until then- hopefully this weekend.
Anyway about the dust we have two cockatiels in the house that create that white dust and we are considering building them their own little area in the coop but we're not sure they would be able to handle the winter temps. We might even be willing to risk it;).
