How big should a coop and run be, for up to 6 hens. Just starting and want to start with a small flock. Most I would feel like I could handle would be 10 hens.

Go to the forum "Raising backyard chickens". Click on the coop and run design section - all your questions will be answerd. Build bigger rather than smaller. Chickens are addictive.

Greetings!

I highly reccomend the Garden Coop. It is a good size for about 8 chickens, and it has good ventilation. The plans for it can be found here: http://www.thegardencoop.com/

By the way, I did not write these plans, nor do I have any connection whatsoever with the people who did.

Hello and welcome from Ohio....so glad you joined. Best of luck on your coop building project. Will be starting one of my own soon, but for 20 chickens :)

Welcome. If you go to the coops part of this website, they have pictures of different kinds & sizes of coops. I love that section..Dreamtime. Build as big a coop as you can afford. 6' x 10' would be a good size for a coop for that many hens, but not for a coop run combo. Even if you plan to free range your hens, a secure run will make your life a lot easier. It means you won't have to worry on days when you can't be home at dusk to lock them up, can go on vacation without having to worry about whoever you get to feed them, losing some, and when bad weather comes, it gives them someplace to go.
