Building a coop and run

actually a question,, i hope it is not silly,, i have a coop, and it is quite large,, i actually moved to this house and they had chickens before, everything looks in order but,,, the door for the chickens to go in is close to the ground,, in other words the opening is about 8 inches above the ground.. i noticed that most coops 's doors are about 2 feet high,, or always have a ramp into the coop.. can i ask what is the reasons for the ramp... will it help to keep snakes out, the coop is pretty tight otherwise,, any advise would be appreciate,,
