We currently have 4 gold sex links about 3 weeks old and are thinking about getting a few barred rocks to round out the flock.

BUt my real question is---Will a pine tree and needles cause problems in the run?

I was planning on using my existing shed as a base for my coop and extending from there the run underneath a pine tree. I have some work to do on the tree as the lower end of it has a ton of dead branches and the first branches would be about 15' up. , but the base of the tree would be inside the run?

Any thought would help. I can post some pics tomorrow evening if that would help?

Thanks
Shane

I don't see any downside. You may have pine sap drippings from time to time, but no issues with the birds eating the pine needles or bark (if they even eat it at all).

I have mine under a pine tree and it does make a mess in the run. Pine needles, cones (which I have always been afraid of a cone come flying off a tree from wind and hitting ones of my hens in the head) and branches sometimes during storms. I rake my run fairly often but yes, it can make it messy. I had no choice as it was the only place could put my coop but if you have somewhere else to put one I would.

Pine needles, branches and cones won't do any harm in the run, personally I'd just leave them there

Aside from overhanging branches potentially giving predators an easy way to get into your run if it doesn't have a top, I don't see any problems with having a pine tree there.

Good luck, have fun,

My Dad's run/coop has been under a canopy of huge pines for 30yrs - never a problem. Heck, at one point, they (trees) were the main posts for the fencing.

I wouldn't be concerned about it. I've just finished building mine, and since my property is all pines, I didn't really have a choice.
