Ventalation is a must, in any coop. But you always need a area to get away from the cold. With any animal, they do better then we would assume in the cold. But that by no means says to leave them out in the cold without some sort of shelter. I would choose to do what ever makes you feel like they are safe, just make sure what ever you do. Is predator proof, i would hate for you to walk out and see a fox in their hoop coop. We love hard wire cloth because its small enough holes not many small animals can squeeze threw and its sturdy. But it is hard on ducks feet, so i would keep that to the outside of what ever you make for them. You will still have to clean out what ever you make for them. So before building it i would keep in mind. 1.) How are you going to get in there. 2. What are you cleaning it with. 3.) Are you going to mind having to bend over. Or would you like it to where you can stand up right. As far as the coop goes, with the duck house. You still have to clean the houses but that part is easier. lol!

Here is mine. It's 4ft x 4ft (well just under 4ft since the pallet wasn't exactly square). I'm in TX so we have to worry more about the heat than cold. I am going to put a piece of plexi glass over the one open side sans the door when it start regularly getting in the 40's at night. Right now it's only getting into the 60's at night.

it faces south east and has quite a bit of overhang so I don't need to cover it for wind or rain protection. I do have a board I put up when it gets into the 30's or lower. It's just a piece of plywood I slide between 2 nail to keep it up. Even though the front is open it is not drafty at all and it stays nice and dry, even when we get 5 inches of rain and it's stormy. I just finished an addition since it's too small for my current flock. It's just an add on to the side and gives about 5 more sq ft.
