Building a new coop

Wow! Another member here that is building a B&B, rather than a "coop". ;)

Well done OP! That's a fantastic looking coop you've got there.

Question: do you have any kind of venting up high in that peak?

What kind of "girls" did you buy?

TWG
Yes I have a ridge vent that runs the length of the coop, and I have the roof eaves open, on the front I have a gable vent, along with low vents and sliding windows.
I have a mixed flock of older hens and the chicks I got are a variety also

Today is wiring day,
I'm going to install a GFI , a couple outlets for heating the water bucket ,they will be on a switch so I can turn them off when not used. and a fan for those very hot summer days. And a LED ceiling light fixture, so I can see when I need to go in the coop to gather eggs and what not.

I have a light in the coop, mostly for winter laying....but when I need to go in at night I use a headlight, every night for head count and to lock up, and also to do exams. leaves both hands free and doesn't light the whole coop for late night parties.

I never thought about winter laying, last winter my sex links laid all year no problem, but now they are getting older and not laying as many .Do you have the light on a timer? Or do you turn it on/ off, I have a headlight now I use ,it has red light on it also. I use that for doing my head count.

Definitely need a timer, consistency is very important.
Here's a pretty good article on supplemental lighting.

One of mine has a green light, I don't like it. My best one has 3 settings, I use the dimmest for head count(it doesn't bother them) and the brightest for exams.

I moved the hens over to the new coop last night.
Question
How long should I keep them locked up inside the coop ?
I dont want them to try and get in the old coop to roost
Maybe a few days?
Can't remember(and too lazy to scroll back) do you have run?
If so, keep them confined to run for a few more days.

What are plans for old coop?

Yes I have a 25'x50' run,
My plans for the old coop is dismantling it and use the small 6'x11' run for the chicks pop door side, then take the roof off the old coop and install it over the other pop door.
