I'm getting around 30 chicks in May. I wanted to build a larger more permanent brooder for them. In the past I did the giant rubbermaid tub thing. The brooder I plan to build comes from this site in the brooder section. Its called amferro103's brooder, it is the first one pictured. My husband will be helping me and has some carpentry skills, so building it should not be a problem.

In the past, with the rubbermaid bins it was easy to disinfection or clean them after the brooding period was over. I am hoping to have this as a backup for a sick or injured chicken if needed as well as a brooder in the spring. I would want to disinfection tot if I were to put a sick bird in it. How does one go about disinfecting a wood brooder?

My husband suggested we paint the inside of the bottom with fiberglass like some of the Amish built coops have. He said we could not do the top frame like that. I was thinking we could maby paint the top frame with something g like Thompson's water seal. Does anyone have any suggestions on what the best way to do this is and what do you do with your brooders. Is any of this toxic to the chicks? I cant imagine it would be as they use the fiberglass in the larger coops and coops are stainded and watersealed all the time. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
