Building My Chicken Coop

The only thing I'd suggest is to build the run higher and enclose the top. Otherwise, hawks, owls, raccoons, weasels, etc can easily get in and eat your birds.

It looks like "Smarty" turned out to be a pretty Lakenvelder rooster!

LOVED your story!!! The coop and run look fantastic. Wow. I will be getting my chicks in May, so I am in the middle of the coop and run phase.

Welcome and I must say reading that was a nice change of pace from the normal post. Great website, coop and story. We did nearly the same thing last year. Ordered the chicks and then made the coop. Teenager (son now 18 and a Senior) was gaga over the babies and there was a continuous stream of other teens in the kitchen to meet and greet the babies. They loved them and in fact will still stop by and go out back to see the hens. We also have little ones (grandchildren - aged 2 both boys) that think chickens are the best thing in the world. They love to give them treats and just hang out. I am so glad to have done this. I understand everything you said about the whole experience. I wish I had done it sooner because I think we are all better for it.
