I have until May to get everything setup for my chickies, but I'm already starting. Got the heat lamp and will have the search the closets for a Rubbermaid tote. I should have one thats see through and empty. The wait is sooooooooo long though. I had to get them in May cause we'll be going away in April and didn't want them to be alone at any time.

I am so nervous. Especially I dint exactly know what day there going to be here I think march 3 and I'm supposed to go to a Disney on ice field trip with my daughters preschool on the 3 rd. So I'm just hoping they come after that. And I'm getting 14 chicks. These are my first chicks. I think I got too many lol. I'll handle it though. I'm very excitied and can't wait to hold them. Were going to build the brooder out of wood. My hubby has a sawmill so we have a ton of wood to make it with. I'll be posting pics by the end of the day. My husband leaves to work tomorrow so he has to get it done today.

I'm Not, LOL. My chicks are due to hatch today and I still have all the lumber in a pile in the garage, they may be in a rubbermaid brooder for a while as I had planned to build it today, but now I'm really sick and because I am pregnant I can't take much to make me feel better.
Our chicks arrive in mid-March -- probably 30 with the extras the hatchery will add in for extra warmth during shipping. I had chicks when I was little but this is my husband's first time with them. We'll be building our brooder probably in the next week or so. We're excited but our kids even more so!
I put an order in at Cackle for 50 Delaware Pullets, 4 Delaware Roosters, and 2 RIR Roosters. 28 are mine and the other 28 are for a friend. We live 25 miles away and we saved $20 on shipping! Our plan is to start a small hatchery selling RIR, Buff Orphingtons, EE's, Delawares, Cuckoo Marans, Welsummers, Barred Rocks, and a few rare breeds. Our goal is to have 20-25 hens of each breed to hatch chicks of standard breeds and also Red Stars / Black Stars. We will be selling chicks and also fertile eggs in 2012! There is a huge demand for chickens around here and we both enjoy our chicks. I'm excited for them to get here in a week or so! I also have an order in at Central Hatchery for 100 Rsl to grow and sell as ready to lay pullets. They should be here on March 3rd!
Here is a brooder I made from pallets. Its 3x7 and 2 ft tall.

Still trying to get the brooder started. It has to get done today. Plus my husband works out if town 5 days a week so he only has the weekends to make it and I'm scared to try. Lol

Don't be scared to try! Just don't look down the business end of the nail gun and keep digits away from the saw blade! I think in a lot of ways women are better at building things because they tend to plan more and be more patient, they just often lack the confidence.....give it a go!

Wow. That's alot!! Lol. I would like to eventually have a hatchery but I'm just learning about them so maybe by next year I'll be ready. Im getting just an assorted brown egg layers 12 of those then i got rir hen and rooster for some reason I like them and thought I'd try them out. I'm kinda nervous about the rooster. I don't want him to be mean like I here from everyone but I'm hoping with us handling them alot he'll be friendly!! Good luck with all your chicks and chickens!!! I can't wait to post pics of our brooder. Soon!!!
