Today we got this great old window from our friends. They just had it stored in their wood shop and it's got these great old hinges.

Hey.... speaking of plants.... what is the one on the right side of your coop with the purple/red leaves? Is that a maple?
Sorry if thats a silly question.. but here in Florida we don't see as many northern trees.... I think it looks very pretty!

Thanks! That's a Japanese Maple....very common here. It's about 6yrs old and we LOVE it!

. Total newbie here and plan to order some chix soon and just purchased the plans to the "garden coop" a couple nights ago. Looking forward to seeing more pix of your finsihed coop, love the window btw, perfect fit? Congrats on your little babies. So far which chix (breed) do you think is the sweetest? In spending hours on this website, I think we want an EE, buff orbington, silkie, cochin bantam and maybe a couple australorp for good egg production. So far our sweetest chicks are the Maran (by far....and the smartest) and the Red Orpington. They like to be held and the Maran learned "step up" at a week old.
The Light Brahma so far is the biggest cry baby....so loud!

Here's a little tip....when you're attaching the hardware (no fun let me tell you) there are parts that will overlap. The plans show to sew them together, but it's sooo wide in their photos. We kept the stitches closer together and feel that it looks nicer.

We also did not wrap the hardware all around....it was just easier for us to add it in panels....and later we will frame each section w/ smaller pieces of wood to cover up the edges of the hardware.
On the bottom panels, we dug them down a foot and then buried the hardware.

Make sure to measure each section before you cut....don't assume that they are all the same size.

We are making the door now.
